Binman Returns iPad To Owner A Year After It Disappeared

A Malaysian binman in Singapore has reunited a woman with her iPad a year after it disappeared.

Muhammad Khidir Samsudin, known as ‘Eday’, said he found the device along with a broken laptop in a plastic bag while on the job with his colleague Yuamirul.

The 25-year-old developmental science graduate told local media: “After our job was done, I charged the iPad and found that it was working fine.”

According to Eday, who arrived in the island city-state of Singapore some three months ago, the device was not password protected and he managed to locate the Apple ID corresponding to the owner.

He told local media that it was normal to find discarded gadgets amongst the rubbish. However, he decided to get in touch with the owner, Singaporean Michelle Lim, just in case she still wanted the iPad.

He wrote an email to Lim saying: “I’m Eday as rubbish collector. I found your ipad in recycle bin while im working. If you lost it can contact me on whatssap”. (sic)

Deciding it was worth a shot, the young man added: “If you throw it before, asking your permission to use it for my own? Anything just let me know and find me on whatsapp. Thank you.”

A pleasantly surprised Lim posted on Facebook: “Lost my brand new iPad Pro more than a year ago.

“Today around 7pm, I checked my email and saw ‘FOUND YOUR IPAD’ in my Inbox!

“Least expected that this is real! These two Good Samaritans are with SembWaste (Senoko Depot). Eday contacted me. Shocked and surprised, I almost cried.

“My heartfelt thanks to Eday and Yuamirul. They are Malaysians working here in SG.”

Eday posted a screenshot of Lim’s post on Twitter on 2nd December, writing: “1st December was a great day for us! Leave it here for our memory. Im Malaysian!”

He also included a selfie with Lim and Yuamirul after they met for a meal as reward for their good deed.

Eday said: “When we met to pass the iPad, she looked so happy. I knew that the iPad must have been important and meaningful to her.”

Lim has since posted to Facebook: “Eday and Yuamirul deserve a more fulfilling and rewarding job. They are young, hardworking and most importantly, honest and humble. Also realised they are degree holders, speak and write well too. These two young gentlemen can do something to suit their calibre.”
