This is a moment a motorcyclist is sent flying by a skidding lorry but is saved by his brand new helmet which cops had gifted to him earlier that day.

The incident took place in the town of Caozhai outside Jinhua City in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang after traffic police in the area gifted the biker with a helmet earlier that morning.

In the CCTV footage, the biker, identified as Mr Cao, appears to pull out in front of an oncoming lorry.

The lorry driver Mr Liu applies the brakes and takes evasive action, but the rear end of his lorry slides away from him and crashes into the biker.

The motorcyclist is sent flying and his brand new helmet appears to fly off after he lands on the tarmac.

Mr Liu told local media that he was unable to “prepare” himself after the scooter “turned left in front of me”.

He added: “Although I applied the brakes, I saw that he was heavily hit by the rear end. I thought he might have died.”

Mr Cao was sent to hospital after the accident. Although he suffered heavy bruising and five broken ribs, he did not suffer a serious head injury – thanks to his helmet.

He said: “The helmet was a gift from the Jinhua Caozhai Traffic Police. This morning I went into town to get the free helmet.

“Without it, I cannot imagine what could have happened. Huge thanks to the traffic police!”
