Victim Aileen Satik, 20, died when she and her boyfriend rowed while they were on a bike ride in the harbour city of Latakia on 18th January.

Suspect Suleiman R. – believed to be 22 – suddenly pulled out a knife and plunged it into helpless Aileen three times, horrified witnesses told police.

Then, as she fell to the ground, he ran over her with his motorcycle and only fled when a passerby fired a pistol into the air.

Aileen was taken to hospital but died from her injuries.

In a statement, Syria’s Ministry of Interior said: “He admitted that he had stabbed her because there were differences between them.

“Investigations are continuing to uncover the circumstances of the incident, and he will be duly brought to justice.”

Ironically, Aileen had survived years of Syria’s brutal civil war.

In the 2018 Women, Peace and Security Index, Syria tied with Afghanistan as the worst country in the world to be a woman.
