Eye drops can be used to spike victims’ drinks, making them easy targets for robbers and rapists, and it is a practice allegedly used by a criminal gang known as ‘Las Goteras’, according to local media.

Reports said that the police are currently going through CCTV footage to establish whether the victim left the karaoke bar on his own and his movements thereafter.

Gonzalez Kusulas had returned to the Mexican capital after graduating from university in May. Reports said that he planned to return to the US to work as a lawyer there.

Witnesses said that he spent several hours with someone at the karaoke bar before leaving.

His body was found the following morning and an autopsy showed that he had a large quantity of the substance cyclopentolate in his system, commonly used in eye drops, mixed with alcohol.

Gonzalez Kusulas’ body had not been stabbed or shot, but his arms and legs had minor injuries that suggested he could have been thrown to the ground.

In 2018, two women from the Las Goteras gang reportedly robbed two men in their hotel room after spiking their drinks with eye drops in a bar which knocked them out for 16 hours.

The investigation is ongoing.
