This stunning Romanian palace with 120 rooms that was built by a beer baron and later confiscated by the communists is up for sale for 20 million GBP.

The plush palace is situated in the historical centre of the western Romanian capital Bucharest and boasts 43 bathrooms.

The Bragadiru Palace is named after its founder, Dumitru Marinescu Bragadiru (1842-1915).

Bragadiru was originally born to a poor family, but became a leading European industrialist by the start of the 20th century.

Local media reported how he set up a brewery under his name towards the end of the 19th century when only two others existed in Bucharest, both of German origin, Luther (the future Grivita brewery) and Oppler (later GIB).

Near the brewery, Bragadiru constructed a recreation centre for employees that included a ballroom for workers’ events.

The Bragadiru Palace was designed by Austrian architect Anton Shuckerl and it features stucco rendering, ornate statues, Venetian mirrors and Victorian-style balconies, according to reports.

In June 1948, the property was confiscated by the Soviets and became the Lenin Culture House until the fall of the Communist regime in 1989.

The impressive structure then remained neglected until 2003 when it was returned to Bragadiru’s descendants who restored it, according to local media.

Reports said the palace has 120 rooms on three levels, including 43 bathrooms and grounds of 40,000 square feet, and is available to buy for 25 million EUR (21.1 million GBP).
