This is the moment a baffled Russian driver comes across a road-running Australian emu dashing through the snow in front of his car before scarpering into a nearby field.

The unusual mid winter scene was filmed in the district of Anninsky in the south-western Russian region of Voronezh Oblast where temperatures are often below 0 degrees Celsius.

In the footage, an emu is seen running along the icy road as a stumped motorist slows down and allows it to pass in front of his car into a nearby field.

It currently remains unclear where the emu came from and whether it has since been captured by its owners.

Netizen ‘Galina Anufrieva’ commented: “The emu is running away from the coronavirus…”

‘Tatyana’ said: “It’s sad. It is most probably lost and doesn’t know where to go.”

The emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) is the second-largest living bird by height after its relative the ostrich. It is endemic to Australia where it is the country’s largest naturally found bird.
