A workmate saw the young woman sucked into the machine’s roller, but did not have enough time to stop the equipment or save her.

An ambulance arrived on the scene, but paramedics could only pronounce the woman dead.

Montemurlo mayor Simone Calamai said: “It is a tragedy that affects the whole community and I send my condolences, also on behalf of the whole municipal administration, to the parents, brother and son of the young woman. She recently became a mother, she was very happy.”

Italian trade unionist Pierpaolo Bombardieri said: “At 22, you have your whole life ahead of you. At 50, you have a family behind you. At all ages, you have projects and dreams to fulfil.

“Dying on the job is never acceptable. Almost every day, a worker goes to their job and never returns home. Of course, there are checks, investigations, fines, compensation packages, but life cannot be compensated or monetised. We must bring the issue of occupational safety back to companies.”

According to Il Gazzettino, the warping machine the victim was using has been seized by the authorities along with a ‘twin’ model to better understand what went wrong.
