This is the moment a bear and its cub are filmed rummaging through the bins in a Spanish town before they hop it over a fence and run off down the road into the night.

The incident was filmed by residents in the municipality of Villablino in the province of Leon in the northern Spanish autonomous community of Castile and Leon and was later shared on Facebook by netizen ‘Amparo Gomez Balsera’.

According to eyewitnesses, the bears were prowling the urban area for several hours and then returned to the same spot the next day.

One resident told local media: “I saw the bears over the last two nights, but people have told me that they have been coming here more than that.”

Local media said that bear sightings in residential areas are becoming more frequent as they leave their habitat in search of food.

A spokesperson for the Brown Bear Foundation called the incident “an anecdotal case” but said that it is preventable.

The bear species is not known.

Netizen ‘Vanessa Prieto’ commented: “Poor bears, imagine how hungry they must be.”

‘Maria Baudor’ said: “Animals are starving and that is why they approach our towns.”
