Barca Star Quits Twitter After Angering Sevilla Fans

Barcelona’s on-loan midfielder Carles Alena has shut down his Twitter account after reportedly receiving a wave of insults for labelling himself “anti-Sevilla”.

Barcelona midfielder Alena, 22, is currently on-loan until the end of the season at Real Betis who are based in the city of Seville located in the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain.

Alena gave an interview to radio programme ‘El Larguero’ broadcast by Spanish radio network Cadena SER where the host asked him if he was an anti-Sevilla fan as Betis and Sevilla are rivals.

Alena answered: “Well, well. Honestly, yeah. When you get to Betis you see the rivalry between these clubs. Right now I am totally for Betis.”

The comments reportedly angered many staunch Sevilla supporters as netizens took to social media to berate the midfielder with insults on his Twitter account.

Local media report the led to Alena cancelling his Twitter account, however, his Instagram is still active.

The footballer has not made an official statement since suspending the account.

Alena signed for Real Betis until the end of the season on loan from Barcelona this transfer window. Betis are 13th in La Liga with 24 points. They are set to play seventh-place Getafe on 26th January.
