Bank Clerk Who Stole Nearly GBP 250,000 Turns Herself In Claiming Husbands Gambling Debts Gave Her No Choice

A bank clerk seen in this footage stealing nearly GBP 250,000 has turned herself in and claimed that her husband’s gambling debts gave her no choice, after the heavies he owed money to threatened her.

Anna Grigorieva, 30, was caught on CCTV as she allegedly stole RUB 23 million (GBP 235,000) from a branch of Alfa-Bank, the largest private bank in Russia, in the city of Achinsk, which is located in Krasnoyarsk Krai, in Russia’s Siberia region, on 7th December.

Grigorieva, who had worked as a cashier at the bank for eight years, turned herself in to the police after they spoke to her mother and managed to contact her directly, with one police officer convincing her that turning herself in was the best course of action.

Irina Volk, a spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, said: “One of the officers of the criminal investigation department suggested that the mother of the suspect was in fact aware of her whereabouts. It was decided to talk to her again.

“During the conversation, the operative managed to build a constructive relationship with the woman. As a result, she convinced her daughter to stop hiding and report to the police.”

Grigorieva allegedly stole the money because her husband had huge gambling debts, according to local media outlet Komsomolskaya Pravda, which speculated that she may have been forced to commit the theft by the people to whom her husband owes money.
