Russian police have launched an investigation into a pensioner after police discovered kitten remains in a cooking pot in her kitchen together with cat skins being stretched and dried on her balcony.

According to the news website NTV’s report, residents of the building in the city of Shakhty in the Russian federal subject of Rostov Oblast noticed that an unpleasant smell was frequently coming from the unidentified pensioner’s flat.

The pensioner’s neighbours then decided to call the police, as the unpleasant smell at the entrance of the building was becoming increasingly frequent and problematic.

Several videos posted on the Internet and filmed in the flat shows mountains of rubbish and a saucepan, which, according to the voiceover contains ‘fragments of kitten remains.’

In another video, the pensioner is seen being quizzed and repeatedly saying that she did not kill or eat the cats herself
that were found in the kitchen and filmed on the balcony.

She said that the remains of kittens in the cooking pot were from animals that were already dead when she heated them up, and that she did it to feed the bodies to the remaining kittens. She also admitted skinning them.

She did not elaborate on why she skinned them, but one of the videos highlights a large number of stretch-dried cat skins in the woman’s home.

According to the news website Interfax’s report, volunteers took 41 kittens, an adult cat, and a puppy from the pensioner’s flat and placed them in the Svyatobor animal rehabilitation centre.

A representative of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the region made a statement about the incident and said that an investigation had been launched.
