A nine-month-old baby has survived a head-on crash with a lorry in Germany that killed both his parents.

Parents Lisa Klotz, 26, and her husband Christopher Klotz, 28, from the German district of Marburg-Biedenkopf had made a short trip to the shops to buy things for their little boy Toni, who is nine months old.

On the way back home the family had an accident while travelling between the districts of Breidenbach-Oberdieten and Eschenburg-Simmersbach in the German state of Hesse on Wednesday afternoon (4th August).

The incident happened when their vehicle collided with a lorry on Route 253 and was thrown against a second car driving behind it.

All three vehicles left the road after the crash including the lorry that ended up in a ditch as a result of the impact.

Both parents died at the site while their little one that was buckled into the child seat survived although badly injured and is currently in the hospital recovering from two broken thighbones and a cerebral haemorrhage.

The truck driver who was reportedly a Romanian citizen was also taken to the hospital but was responsive despite the truck overturning as a result of the crash.

After recreating the crash experts found out that it was the 28-year-old father who came into the opposite lane for reasons still unknown to the police.

The road where the crash occurred remained closed after the accident.

Lisa’s father Frank Dehnert, 55, who lived with the family and is currently undergoing chemotherapy because of cancer said: “They actually planned to be back around 3pm. My daughter usually called me when she was late.”

The man added: “From 3.15pm on, I kept trying to call. I read about the accident on Facebook. I thought that maybe that’s why the two of them late, as they were stuck in a traffic jam.

But after the police came to his door at around 5.15pm Frank said he “basically knew what was going on.”

He explained how his nephew is the only thing keeping him alive and added: “I think Toni is also experiencing trauma, he wakes up every 15 minutes, flinches, screams and can only really be calmed down by me.”

The 55-year-old man plans on applying for custody over Toni despite his difficult health and financial situation, as he also helped the family by vouching for Lisa and Christoph’s EUR 400,000 (GBP 338,000) investment in the property that they all lived in.

The police have not revealed further details regarding the crash investigation yet.
