A young woman unaware she was pregnant has given birth standing up in the street, with the baby girl banging her head on the ground as she came out.

Despite the potentially fatal birth, both mother and daughter are now said to be doing well in hospital.

The unexpected birth happened while the mother was walking on the streets with a pal in the colony Los Bordos in the municipality of Ecatepec in the central Mexican state of Mexico.

The young mother, identified as Maria Guadalupe, went into labour and did not even have enough time to ask for medical assistance.

According to local newspaper El Universal, the young woman said she had the sensation that she needed to go to the toilet-

The baby was born while she was standing up before she could get to a WC.

Maria Guadalupe told paramedics on the scene that the baby fell from a height of around 40 centimetres (15 inches) during the birth and hit her head on the ground.

She also told paramedics that she was not aware that she was even pregnant.

Paramedics told El Universal that the mum is from a low-income family.

El Universal said that both mother and daughter were taken to a nearby hospital and they are both in good health.
