This baby has tragically died after she suffered burns to 90 percent of her body when a makeshift barbecue exploded.

The incident took place in her family home in the town of Juara in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso on Saturday, 30th October.

Helena do Nascimento, who was just 1 year old, was fatally injured in the incident and her mother, 30-year-old Gessymara Torres, suffered burns to 60 percent of her body.

As of yesterday (Wednesday, 10th November), Gessymara remained in hospital in the Mato Grosso state capital Cuiaba, some nine to 10 hours away by car from Juara.

The youngster’s paternal aunt Adriane Portes told the news portal G1 that several relatives were gathered at the family home for a barbecue.

She claimed the explosion was caused by the heat of the alcohol-fuelled makeshift barbecue, which had already been switched off by that point.

Although both mother and daughter were some five metres (16 feet) away from the barbecue at the time, they were both hit by the flames.

Helena initially survived and was admitted to the ICU. However, her death was announced by her aunt yesterday (Wednesday, 10th November).

She was buried in Juara that same afternoon.

Her funeral was attended by her father Edilson, who only suffered minor injuries in the explosion.

Gessymara will need to undergo several operations and no date has yet been set for her discharge. Her family is currently accepting donations to pay for her treatment.

In some reports, Gessymara’s name was given as Geisa.

The local Civil Police (Brazil’s investigative police force) are reportedly investigating the case.
