This Australian tourist is in a medically-induced coma after being stabbed in the chest during an attempted robbery in the Argentine capital.

The incident occurred on Saturday in front of the Law University in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, while Australian tourist Terrence Luke Bulmer, 65, from Brisbane, was on his normal morning run.

Local media report Bulmer had arrived in Buenos Aires on Friday night and had only planned to spend a few hours in the city before embarking on a cruise ship to Antarctica and southern Chile on Sunday morning.

He decided to run and go sightseeing at Plaza Francia when an attacker reportedly pulled out a knife and tried to rob him. The Australian was reportedly stabbed in the chest close to his heart, damaging his circulatory system.

An eyewitness who was walking his dog called the emergency services and Bulmer was taken to a medical centre before undergoing an urgent operation at General Juan Fernandez Hospital.

He remains in a critical condition and he is breathing with the aid of a mechanical ventilator. A doctor from the hospital told reporters: “The patient has been admitted into the intensive care unit after being treated for a penetrating thoracic trauma with cardiac injury.

“His condition, although stable, remains critical and he requires mechanical support for organ function.”

It is unclear if any of the man’s possessions were stolen in the incident.

Investigators found that a man walking his dog in the area had also been beaten that morning and had alerted a police officer. The authorities reportedly suspect that the same individual later attacked Bulmer.

Investigators believe the attacker wanted to steal some of the tourist’s possession before running away in the direction of the Villa 31 area of the city.

Reports state Bulmer works for the mining company Theiss based in Brisbane and he is in charge of many of the company’s projects, mainly in Indonesia. His wife Janette is reportedly accompanying him in the hospital.

No arrests have been reported and the investigation is ongoing.
