ATTACKING DEFENDER: Ex-Man City Man Boateng Fined GBP 1m For Beating Partner After Card Game

A court in Germany has fined former Manchester City man Jerome Boateng GBP 1 million for beating his girlfriend after a game of cards.

Presiding judge Andreas Forstner found the centre-back guilty of two-fold assault at District Court I of Munich on 2nd November.

The 34-year-old Berliner was ruled to have repeatedly hit his ex-partner and mother of his twin daughters while on holiday in the Caribbean in 2018.

The Olympique Lyonnais star avoided jail but was fined a whopping EUR 1.2 million (GBP 1.0 million).

Prosecutor Stefanie Eckert had requested a suspended sentence of one and a half years and a fine of EUR 1.5 million (GBP 1.3 million), while defence lawyers Norman Gelbart and Peter Zuriel had pushed for an acquittal.

The court heard how a game of cards between the couple escalated into a blazing row that saw the 2014 World Cup winner throw a lantern and a cool bag at his then-partner Sherin Senler.

Later on, Boateng is said to have struck her several times, leaving her with a black eye.

Sherin also cut the 2011 FA Cup winner’s lip with a bracelet while trying to defend herself, the court heard, leading him to spit blood on her.

After she reported him to police, Boateng is said to have threatened to take their daughters away from her unless she withdrew her complaint.

Sherin’s lawyer Carolin Luetcke said after the trial: “This was a victory for every victim of domestic violence and hopefully gives encouragement to many other victims.”

The ruling is not final and may be appealed.
