Seven police officers have been arrested after this pretty 29-year-old doctor was taken into custody following a car accident and later died.
Dr Beatriz Hernandez Ruiz was involved in a five-vehicle road accident in the Mexican municipality of Progreso de Obregon on the afternoon of 9th June.
Footage filmed in the aftermath of the accident shows a female police officer holding the young woman by the neck and forcing her into the back of a police car.
According to witness testimony, Beatriz had got out of her car following the accident to survey the damage and to check if anyone needed medical help.
Although no one was injured in the accident, the police, for some reason, arrested the young doctor and took her to the local police headquarters.
By the time Beatriz’ father arrived just hours later, he says he found his daughter on the floor of the police headquarters, with staff trying to revive her.
After her respiratory rate dropped, she was taken to a clinic, reportedly still with vital signs, according to the municipal council. However, she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The municipal council has said that the young woman committed suicide by hanging herself with a piece of fabric inside the headquarters.
However, her family has blamed the officers in charge of guarding her, claiming there was a struggle.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the State of Hidalgo registered the incident as femicide and ordered the arrest of the officers involved.
Four male and three female police officers holding both policing and administrative positions were arrested on 11th June.
At the time of reporting, they were being held in a halfway house, awaiting trial.
The municipal council has complained that the suspects were detained illegally, arguing that they testified voluntarily and should have been released on bail.
It accuses the state government of a politically motivated campaign against Progreso de Obregon mayor Armando Mera Olguin.
The municipal council has also claimed Beatriz was intoxicated at the time of the car accident, which it accuses her of causing.
The council also claims that Beatriz was conscious when her father arrived at the police headquarters and that the two had a blazing row before the former hanged herself.
Since the incident, locals have been protesting the alleged killing and the municipal council’s explanation of the death as suicide.
The case is being investigated.
