An 85-year-old woman has been killed after her car was hit by a huge armoured vehicle as she drove along a road in Switzerland.

The tragedy happened when an 85-year-old driver was travelling together with a female passenger who was not named but who was the same age along the Plonserauweg road in the canton of St Gallen.

Police say that when they approached the crossroads, the elderly driver collided with the armoured fighting vehicle driven by a 24-year-old soldier resulting in serious injuries for the elderly passenger.

Local police said that she was flown by an air ambulance to hospital, but died shortly after arrival.

The military vehicle’s driver was not named but was travelling in an armoured MOWAG Piranha, designed by the Swiss company MOWAG and the two vehicles crashed head on.

The soldier was unharmed and police said that the road was closed for several hours while the cleanup operation took place.

An investigation is being carried out into the cause of the crash. The soldier has been questioned but he is not thought to have been detained.
