Footage released by authorities in China’s south-western Chongqing Municipality shows the girlfriend arriving in a white van and stopping in a breakdown bay inside the Qingshan Tunnel.

Her boyfriend arrives in a 4WD shortly after, having persuaded a friend to follow her in his vehicle along the busy Wanzhou-Lichuan Expressway.

Authorities say the couple had argued at a motorway service area, resulting in the woman driving off on her own in the white van.

Footage from the tunnel shows the couple arguing in the narrow two-lane tunnel, with their friend later driving away after reportedly failing to break up the fight.

During the argument, which police say lasted 20 minutes, the girlfriend can be seen sprinting to the opposite side of the road and throwing kicks and punches at her lover.

A number of cars can be seen passing the couple as they move from one side of the road to the other, and also while the girlfriend lies in the centre of the tunnel.

Chongqing motorway authorities eventually arrived to break up the fight and detained both for their stunt.

The police said they were given verbal warnings but no charges appeared to have been filed.

They did not reveal what the couple were arguing about.
