Two tourists who posed for this snap with big smiles when a shop owner threatened to expose them online for refusing to wear face masks have been fined GBP 86 each by the police for breaking COVID-19 measures.

The incident happened while the couple was enjoying a holiday in the district of Besiktas in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

The tourists, who were staying in a local hotel, angered a nearby shopkeeper when they turned up in her shop without masks.

Shop owner Guliz Gunduz warned the couple that she would photograph them and file a complaint with the police, however the couple was not concerned and even posed with big smiles in the photo.

Guliz shared the snap on Twitter and wrote: “These two people were in my steak tartar shop in Besiktas Ihlamurdere at around 10.15 pm last night, they did not wear face masks despite my warnings, and they posed like this when I said I would expose them.

“They are foreign nationals. When there are no inspections, we see what the results are.”
