A young French girl has been fined 122 GBP for briefly leaving home during COVID-19 lockdown to give her two horses food and water.

The incident took place in the commune of Le Pouliguen in the western French department of Loire-Atlantique after the girl left home with two 20-litre water cans for her horses.

The police spotted the girl, name and age undisclosed, and reportedly issued a fine for 135 EUR (122 GBP) because they felt emergency care should only be afforded to people not animals.

However, the girl’s mother begs to differ and she told reporters: “If we don’t feed and water our horses, it would be animal abuse!

“Giving water to horses may not be vital for us, but it is vital for them.

“The amazing thing is, we called the police station to contest the fine and the officer we spoke to was very understanding about the situation.”

Local media contacted the police station for comment, but officers did not explain the reasons for issuing the fine.

The family has not received the fine yet, but they said they plan to challenge it as soon as it arrives through the door, according to reports.

As of 24th March, there have been 20,149 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in France and 860 deaths.
