These images show how a group of angry mothers have protested in a museum by breastfeeding their babies after a woman was thrown out of the building for doing the same thing.

The protest took place in the Modern Art Museum (MAM) in the Mexican capital Mexico City after the association ‘Normalizando la Lactancia Materna en Mexico’ (Normalising Breastfeeding in Mexico) complained on social media that the museum had thrown out a woman for breastfeeding her son.

The association said in a public statement that several men from the security team at the MAM kicked a woman out of the building, saying that the rules of the institution “forbid consuming food or drinks in the facilities as well as feeding children or bottle-feeding”.

A group of mothers have now gathered inside and in front of the museum to breastfeed in a show of solidarity with the woman who was kicked out.

The MAM have apologised in a statement and said that “the rules were going to be removed to be updated” and the incident was due to a “misinterpretation” by the security staff.

The museum also agreed with the association calling on mothers to breastfeed their children in the institution’s facilities as a way of protesting.

According to local media, the MAM agreed to launch initiatives to raise public awareness about breastfeeding in public and to support it after the protest.

Several images of pieces of art showing women breastfeeding have been posted on social media by the MAM with the message “The MAM is in favour of breastfeeding in public places”.
