This is the moment a furious father confronts a nurse inside a hospital corridor after allegedly finding an insect in his toddler’s IV drip.

Hashtags related to the incident, such as “insect found in IV drip”, have been viewed more than 135 million times on Chinese social media site Weibo.

The parent named only as Mr Huang said he took his three-year-old son to Leshan People’s Hospital, in south-western China’s Sichuan Province, for intravenous fluid treatment for his flu.

The boy named Huang Jianyi had received four IV drips a day since 10th December, with his dad finding what he believes was an insect five minutes into the latest treatment session just before midnight on 15th December.

Mr Huang said: “At first I thought it was dirt on the outside of the tube, but then I realised it was an insect inside the tube.”

Mr Huang said his son then began developing a rash on his back, which he suspected was a bacterial infection from the insect.

In a statement on 17th December, Leshan People’s Hospital confirmed the incident, saying it had apologised to Mr Huang.

However, the statement mentions the discovery of “foreign matter” inside the intravenous tube instead of using Mr Huang’s description.

The hospital said Mr Huang’s son was kept under observation for 17 hours and discharged – with his family’s agreement – the next day after no further symptoms developed.

Mr Huang has been given the tube in question, and he is expected to have the suspected insect tested.

Leshan People’s Hospital said it would accept any legal consequences but named the intravenous tube’s supplier as Henan Shuguang Jianshi Medical Equipment Group Co Ltd.

The company from Central China has yet to comment on the incident as investigations continue.
