This is the viral moment teachers at a boarding school smash nearly 30 phones with two hammers in front of students as one of them apparently chants “Allahu akbar”.

The bizarre incident reportedly took place at the Muslim Al-Hasanah Darunnajah 9 boarding school located in the province of Banten, in south-western Indonesia’s Western Java Region.

Local media report that the school has strict rules against pupils taking phones into class, saying that the devices would be confiscated and later destroyed for the whole school to watch.

In the video, a host of phones, reportedly nearly 30, can be seen on a desk with two men, believed to be teachers, standing behind it.

Dozens of children can be seen looking on as the men begin smashing the phones with a pair of hammers and smiling.

The video has since been posted on social media where it has received over 1.45 million views.

Reports state that the school had threatened students who were caught with their phones in class that they would be transferred to another school temporarily for breaking the rules.

Local media report some of the phones were destroyed in the incident while others only suffered broken screens.

It is unclear if the phones belonged to students at the school.

“Allahu akbar” means ‘God is (the) great(est)’ in Arabic and is used in a wide variety of contexts, including to express relief, happiness and even as a greeting. It is also used by non-Muslim Arabic speakers.
