An Alabama teenager has claimed that he was bitten by a hamster – which has since been named as Brian – while he was watching the new Spider-Man movie in the cinema.

Footage shared online appears to show Brian the hamster popping up onto the teen’s lap before he puts an empty popcorn container over it in the incident that took place at an AMC Theatre in the city of Mobile, in the southern US state of Alabama.

The teenager has been named as Ayden Whitton and he was reportedly about 10 minutes into the ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ film when one of his friends apparently spotted what he at first thought was a rat.

Ayden said: “We all lifted our legs.” He added: “We thought it was funny.”

The teenager had left his popcorn bucket on the floor next to his seat and when he next reached for it, he suddenly realised that there was something else inside. That something else turned out to be Brian.

Ayden gazed down and noticed that the fluffy, white hamster had crawled into to his popcorn container.

Whitton said that the rodent could fit in the palm of his hand, and he appears to have put that theory to the test because he claims that the hamster bit him. He said: “I felt it on my hand.”

Ayden added: “And it bit me. So I flipped my bucket over and caught it. I thought it would be the right thing to do. I don’t know why.”

Brian the belligerent rodent had apparently spent five days in the auditorium, the teenager and his family later found out after scouring social media. It is currently unclear if it was a misplaced pet or if it was binging movies.

But Ayden’s close shave with the ferocious predator ruined the movie for him, his mother Dana said.

She said that he had spent eight hours the previous day watching Spider-Man films in preparation for the big day because he had never seen one before. She said: “He had never seen a Spider-Man movie. He texted me while it was happening, and I thought, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me.’ He doesn’t make stuff up, so I knew it was real. It’s just the strangest thing I’ve ever heard.”

Ayden went to find a member of staff with a friend, who refunded his ticket and gave him another bucket of popcorn. But Brian is said to have continued to bite him on his wrist and hand.

Ayden said: “One of the employees was like, ‘What do you want me to do about it?’ I said: ‘I want you to take the hamster.'”

It is still unclear if they did take the hamster or if it was left to poor Ayden to sort out the situation.

But Brian the hamster has reportedly since been found a home.

Mum Dana took to social media yesterday (Wednesday 29th December) to post an update in which she said that the hamster “is safe in a new home”, where he was named Brian.

She added jokingly: “I will keep the new parent anonymous to try to avoid any nasty custody battles. Clearly the first parent is unfit.”
