Adebayor Held In Benin For Quarantine On Trip Home

Former Premier League star Emmanuel Adebayor has been held in quarantine in Benin when he was travelling to his native Togo to be with his family during the coronavirus pandemic.

Former Manchester City striker Adebayor, 36, is reportedly being in Benin however it is unclear where exactly he is staying during his quarantine.

Local media report the striker was stopped by local authorities as his flight had come from the Paraguayan capital city of Asuncion which is considered a risk zone for coronavirus, officially named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization.

Adebayor was signed by Paraguayan top-flight Club Olimpia, based in Asuncion last month, after his contract with Turkish side Kayseri SK ended in December 2019.

Olimpia issued a statement yesterday (Monday) announcing the striker’s trip saying: “Emmanuel Adebayor made the decision to return to his country (Togo, in West Africa) to spend the quarantine declared by the government.

“As an institution, we have informed him of the risks involved with this but his decision was to spend this time with his family.”

Adebayor is set to spend the following two weeks of quarantine in Benin before he is allowed to travel to Togo.

Adebayor played for club giants such as Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid, Monaco and Crystal Palace before his move to the Paraguayan Primer Division.

Despite great expectations placed on the striker, he has yet to make a mark at Olimpia after making two appearances in the Copa Libertadores without scoring a goal before the competition was suspended due to COVID-19.

Olimpia is one of Paraguay’s most successful clubs winning the Primer Division a record 43 times and the Copa Libertadores three times.

Paraguay has a reported 22 cases of the virus which has led to one death in the country. Benin has reported two cases with no deaths.
