An Indonesian soap star has been sentenced to two years and four months in prison for saying that his ex-wife’s genitalia smelled like “salted fish”.

Galih Ginanjar, 31, was sentenced by the presiding judge Agus Widodo via a teleconference on 13th April after a nine-month long legal process.

Ginanjar said that his ex-wife’s genitalia smelled like “salted fish” during a YouTube interview with presenter Rey Utami and her husband Pablo Benua, who were also prosecuted.

Judge Widodo told the court: “I hereby sentence the defendants Pablo Benua, Rey Utami, and Galih Ginanjar for legally and convincingly committing criminal acts of defamation.”

Ginanjar was sentenced to two years and four months behind bars while Utami will spend one year and four months in prison and her husband Benua will serve one year and eight months, according to local media.

The defendants were charged with three alternative articles on immorality, humiliation and defamation following the YouTube interview in June 2019.

In the video, Ginanjar discussed his marriage to actress Fairuz A Rafiq which ended in 2015.

At one point, the soap star said that his ex-wife’s genitals smelled like “salted fish” and that sex would “usually last around 15 minutes” while Utami burst out laughing, according to local media.

The video was taken down at the time, but a copy has been re-uploaded to YouTube which has nearly reached 4 million views.

His ex-wife filed a reported against Ginanjar and Utami and they were charged with slander in mid-July.
