Mexican activists protesting gender violence have taken their fury to the streets and broken into a courthouse in an attempt to publicise their cause.

The protest took place in the city of Hermosillo, in the north-western Mexican state of Sonora and finished in front of the court where some women broke in and burned paperwork.

The protest was organised by the Jovenes Feministas del Desierto (Feminist Young Women of the desert).

During the protest, one woman told local media that the protest was designed to make sure that women are seen as they say that the authorities are making them invisible amid ongoing violence.

When the protest arrived at the court, some activists broke into the building and hung a blanket saying: “estamos en resistencia” (we are resisting).

The footage of the paper burning inside the building caused controversy among netizens.

Local media reported that David Anaya Cooley, the secretary of Public Security of Sonora, arrived to the building along with police officers.

The protests come after officials reported an increase in femicides by 22.5 percent in comparison with 2018.

According to reports, in 2019, 1,066 women were murdered in Mexico.

The mayor of Hermosillo, Celida Lopez Cardenas, expressed regret at what happened and asked the authorities to investigate and take legal measures against anyone who damaged the courthouse.
