Victim Merve Kucuktekin collapsed in agony when her ex, Sabit Turk, soaked her head and torso in the powerful substance.

The acid was so strong – prosecutors told the Konya 3rd High Criminal Court – that it melted part of the door frame.

Soldier Sabit – charged with causing deliberate injury – is said to have been furious after being dumped by Merve.

Prosecutors are asking for an aggravated life sentence. Prisoners sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment can be parolled after serving at least 30 years, or 36 years if given more than one sentence.

The court was told that Merve suffered severe second-degree burns across her face, neck, torso, arms and hands.

Heartbreaking images of her in hospital show her swathed in bandages with just her eyes and ber badly burned lips visible.

Brave Merve – still undergoing treatment seven months after the attack – was allowed to attend the hearing under medical supervision.

Turk confessed to the 19th June attack to police in Cumra, Konya Province, Turkey.

In his police statement following his arrest, he admitted he had doused his ex with a chemical substance he used for car cleaning.

Turk said she had called off the engagement a year ago and claimed he had gone to Merve’s home to persuade her to take him back.

But he tricked her into opening her building front door by pretending he had come to read the water meter.

He told police: “She cursed and insulted me. Then I threw the liquid in my bottle at Merve’s face.

“All the while, she held her face with her hand. I fled the scene in panic.”

He denied the crime was premeditated, claiming he kept the liquid with him at all times because he was “meticulous about the cleanliness of my vehicle”.

An investigation carried out at the Ankara Gendarmerie Criminal Laboratory found there was strong acid in the spilt liquid chemical.

Turk told the court that he had met his victim online in 2019, saying: “We met online. She used to come to me when I was in Ankara.

“The incident happened on June 19th. She said to me on social media, ‘You are not a man’.

“It insulted my masculine pride. I wanted to meet to find out why.

“First, I went to the store where she worked, she wasn’t there.

“When I went to her house later, she wasn’t there either. I spent the night in the car.

“The next day I went to her house and knocked on the door of her apartment. ‘Who is it?’ came the voice. ‘It’s me’ I replied.

“After the door opened, she started swearing at me and my family. I didn’t mean to hurt her, but it happened.”

The defendant also claimed he was unaware the liquid he threw at her could hurt her.

The trial is ongoing.
