This is the moment a driver in eastern China topples off an overpass and crashes onto the road below.

The 38-year-old driver, named Mr Ji in local media in Shanghai, wound up in hospital with serious injuries after the car accident on 5th December.

CCTV footage filmed from two sides of the road shows Mr Ji speeding on the overpass after overtaking a vehicle.

But it seems he failed the notice the lane coming to an abrupt end as he violently slams his car into the water-filled partitions.

The force of the impact causes Mr Ji’s car to break through onto an unfinished stretch of road and drive off into the void way then landed on the traffic below.

Another surveillance video captured the overturned vehicle crashing down in the middle of the busy street striking cables that sends the security camera rocking backwards and forwards.

Eyewitnesses at the accident scene reportedly helped turn the car back up while waiting for emergency services to arrive.

Mr Ji ended with severe injuries and had to be rushed to hospital, local media said.

Fortunately, there were no other casualties.

The Shanghai traffic police are currently investigating the accident.

After the video was shared on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, some netizens speculated that Mr Ji may have been trying to avoid the traffic police prior to the crash.
