This is the shocking moment an animal activist films the piled-up dead bodies of around 100 animals in a Russian shelter that were killed by having their throats slit.

The incident took place in the city of Yakutsk in the eastern Russian region of Yakutia and activists said there were around 100 animals with their throats slit in the opened container.

In the footage, a female activist says: “It’s 9th March and this container is left open. Look at the animals, so many of them. Cats and dogs, about 100 of them I suppose. All dead.”

The volunteers spoke with the shelter’s administrators who claimed they had been instructed to terminate the animals after a directive from the federal veterinary service.

According to reports, one of the dogs was diagnosed with rabies and it was decided to put down all the other animals that had come into contact with it.

An animal activist called the regional veterinary department who reportedly said that 72 cats and dogs had been put down after coming into contact with a dog with rabies.

However, they were unable to explain why the animals had their throats cut instead of being put down with a lethal injection.

Aisen Nikolaev, acting head of Sakha Republic, said he had passed on the information to the police so they can launch an investigation.

He added that a special commission will be set up which will include volunteers and journalists for better transparency.

The investigation continues.
