The boyfriend of a glamorous Russian beauty blogger has been jailed for nine years after he cut her throat and then hid her body in a suitcase.
Maxim Gareev, 33, was convicted of killing influencer Ekaterina Karaglanova, 24, after her body was found naked and stuffed in a suitcase at her flat in the Russian capital Moscow.
According to the press service of the Russian capital’s Nikulinsky district court in Moscow, he will have to serve the sentence in a maximum-security penal colony after he admitted killing her because she had criticised his performance in bed.
He was quoted as saying: “She repeatedly insulted me, she was completely humiliating about my sexual abilities and dismissive of my financial resources. I was at my wits’ end.”
Gareev will also have to pay 2.5 million RUB (29,400 GBP) in damages to the victim’s family.
In August 2019, Gareev told cops that he had gone to confront the victim at her flat on the city’s Pyryeva Street about the fact that she was also in a relationship with a wealthy 52-year-old who she had met over Instagram.
He said he was furious when he turned up at her property and found that she had already packed a suitcase ready to go on a trip with the other man, and that she was wearing sexy lingerie and stockings. The young woman and her new lover had reportedly planned to celebrate her 25th birthday on July 30th in Amsterdam.
She had been outraged at his demands that she give up the relationship when she reportedly criticised him over his sexual abilities. She also allegedly suggested that he was a lesser man because he did not have the financial resources of her other lover, he claimed.
Furious at the rejection and the insults, he reportedly said to cops he had grabbed a knife and repeatedly stabbed her in the chest before finally cutting her throat.
He then fled but was tracked down and arrested after video showed him leaving the property with a suitcase. Police found him hiding in a rented apartment in the town of Kotelniki near Moscow.
He said the body had been in the suitcase but when he failed to find a place to hide it, had returned it to the apartment where he then dumped it before putting his own bloodied clothes in a separate suitcase and dumping those at a landfill site.
When her mother failed to contact the girl, she raised the alarm with the landlord and he then discovered the crime with the young woman’s body stuffed almost naked apart from the lace garters in a suitcase.
Police quickly tracked down her 52-year-old boyfriend, who confirmed they were planning to fly to Amsterdam, but who had an alibi for the time of the murder.
The young woman had been studying to be a doctor, but found it more lucrative working as a model and Instagram influencer, even taking part in a beauty contest organised by the Russian version of Maxim magazine. She also had an Instagram account in the name “Katty loves life” that had over 80,000 subscribers.
