These images show what happened when a young girl lost all four fingers on her right hand after her uncle’s tofu slicer chopped them clean off.

The eight-year-old named only as ‘Xiao Rui’ underwent an eight-hour operation at Xuzhou Renci Hospital in China’s eastern Jiangsu Province to have them reattached.

According to her parents, Xiao Rui was playing at her uncle’s tofu shop when she slid her hand into the tofu slicing machine and it suddenly turned on.

The blade cut straight through her four fingers, which were severed clean off and then gathered by her family and taken to the hospital.

Doctor Li Jia and his team spent eight hours operating on Xiao Rui, reattaching the vessels, tendons and nerves in each finger before fixing them in place using temporary steel rods.

She is in stable condition but is continuing post-operative treatment at the facility.

Doctor Li said of her recovery: “Most daily tasks she will be able to do, but there will inevitably be a minor impact on the mobility of each finger.”

In the event of a severed digit, the medic advised the following:

“Remember these words: dry and cold.

“Don’t submerge it in water or any sort of disinfectant liquid. Keep it in cold storage – do not freeze – somewhere between 0 to 4 degrees centigrade.

“Wrap it in a clean cloth, put it in a plastic bag, and then cover it with some ice.

“If you can’t find ice, buy two ice lollies and throw them in there.”
