An eight-hour-old newborn has been found abandoned in a rubbish bag by a binman in Argentina.

The newborn boy was found in the neighbourhood of Villa Caraza in the city of Lanus in the Argentine province of Buenos Aires early this week on 23rd February.

The baby, who has been called Tomas by his rescuers, was discovered by a waste collector, who has not been named, inside a plastic bag.

Local media said the man heard cries coming from inside the refuse sack but assumed it was a cat. He ripped it open and was shocked when he saw the abandoned newborn inside who still had his umbilical cord attached and was reported to be an estimated eight hours old at the time.

A family from the neighbourhood realised what happened and immediately called the authorities to take the baby to hospital as he was very cold and had signs of hypothermia.

Netizen Lautaro Tabares, whose family reportedly helped rescue the infant, said on social media that they had called the police but eventually decided to take the baby to a nearby hospital to ensure he received care as soon as possible.

Fortunately, the baby was reported to be healthy and did not suffer any life-threatening injuries.

Tabares added: “We are collecting nappies and clothes for newborns as he is no bigger than a thermos flask. He is also delicate after suffering hypothermia. Please, we ask for help for this young prince.”

Tabares said his family are currently working to get permission to visit little Tomas at the medical centre as he is currently under state care and no family members have claimed him.

There have been no further reports.
