A bus transporting supporters of Ecuadorian side Barcelona SC has fallen off a cliff resulting in the death of eight fans and 37 injured.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday 15th February in the Pan American Motorway when a bus transporting several fans fell off a 15-metre (49-foot) cliff in Peru near the border with Ecuador.
The fans travelled to the Province of Lima to support Ecuadorian side Barcelona during their Copa Libertadores qualifier match against Peruvian side Sporting Cristal which took place on Thursday 13th February.
The bus was reportedly travelling back to Ecuador when the fatal accident happened.
The Peruvian Ministry of Health released a statement shortly after the accident saying: “A bus transporting fans of the club Barcelona of Guayaquil fell from a precipice of 15 metres (49 feet).
“The injured have been transported to nearby health centres. As of now, there are eight dead.”
According to police reports “37 injured people have been rescued and transported to the nearest medical centres”.
Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno released a statement saying: “Our deepest solidarity for the families of the deceased Barcelona fans in an accident in Peru.
“We are coordinating the attention for all those affected and the international procedures that are required.”
President of the South American Confederation of Football (Conmebol) Alejandro Dominguez made a public statement saying: “I am deeply sorry for the passing of eight young supporters of Barcelona of Ecuador.
“I send my condolences to the families and friends at this sad moment.”
It is currently unclear what caused the accident.
Barcelona qualified to the next round of the Copa Libertadores qualifiers and are set to face Paraguayan side Club Cerro Porteno on Thursday 20th February
