Police have made a string of arrests and rescued a months-old baby girl who was auctioned off by her parents for just over 5,000 GBP.

The child born to mother Ms Sun, from the city of Changzhou City in East China’s Jiangsu Province, was carried out of hospital by her dad, Mr Zhao, at just three days old on 15th April this year.

The infant was given to a relative who was acting as a middleman in the trafficking of the girl, who was eventually sold to the highest bidder in provincial capital Nanjing- a married couple without any children.

Chen Dong, an officer with Changzhou’s Anjia Police Station, revealed that the authorities had been alerted to the case as early as April when they received reports of advertisements for the child being posted on social media platforms.

“We followed the clues to Nanjing and discovered the child with the couple who bought her,” Chen said.

He added: “They were immediately arrested.”

Five more people, including the child’s birth parents and their middleman relative, have all been detained for suspected child trafficking.

The girl’s father revealed the child was sold for just 50,000 RMB (5,720 GBP) because they could not afford to raise her.

The police said the child is currently safe with staff at Changzhou Children’s Welfare Institute while officials take the seven suspects to court.
