This is the moment this retired 58-year-old runs a marathon at home as he aims to beat the boredom of coronavirus lockdown.

Antonio Odilvaldo de Souza, known as Toninho, ran the marathon on a 30-metre (98-foot) course set out in his house in the city of Santo Andre in the southeastern Brazilian state of Sao Paulo.

Souza, who was kept fit since his teenage years, said he was “tired” of not being able to run and so decided to measure out a running route in his house, saying “I thought, going there and back is 60 metres, to be able to complete a marathon I would need to do it 704 times”.

He says he began intensified his home training to prepare, using an exercise bike and starting off with a five-kilometre run.

He said: “I then did three 10-kilometre runs. After the fourth day of running, I did the first half marathon, which is 21 kilometres (13 miles).”

After two weeks of training he himself to the test, saying: “I told a friend and he said that if I ran a marathon in the yard he would have a medal made for me. I’m still waiting,”

In the video, he can be seen running in the covered yard as well as in the kitchen of the house as his son Rafael Spinelli provides a running commentary.

On his last lap, his wife Patricia can be seen holding a purple sash across the route which he runs through with hands above his head and a smile on his face before he shows his fitness watch measures 42 kilometres (26 miles) in 3 hours and 47 minutes.

His son said: “I do my runs too, but I only ran a maximum of 21 kilometres. My father, since he turned 56, has been running races with the same amount of kilometres as his age. At the age of 56 he did a 56-kilometre run, at the age of 57 he did the same thing. Now, at 58, he did the same thing.”

The 58-year-old says he now plans to ride “1,000 kilometres (621 miles)” on his exercise bike as he remains in quarantine.
