This 28-year-old man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for killing his eight-month-pregnant ex-girlfriend as he did not want his current girlfriend to know he had fathered her unborn child.

The body of victim Beatriz Mendez Ramirez, 26, was found between the municipalities of Olocuilta and Miramar in the department of La Paz in southern El Salvador on 21st of October 2019.

The Specialised Judgement Court for a Life Free of Violence and Discrimination for the Women of San Salvador reportedly sentenced Henry Alberto Salazar Burgos, 28, to 50 years in prison for her murder, with the killer receiving 40 years for aggravated femicide and 10 years for causing an non-consensual abortion.

Local media report the killer had wanted the victim to undergo an abortion to hide the fact he had fathered a child with her from his new girlfriend, who has not been named.

When the victim refused to have an abortion, he then decided to kill her.

According to the General Attorney’s Office, the investigation found evidence after examining the victims’ phone that Salazar Burgos met Mendez Ramirez on 20th October 2017 and drove her out of the capital San Salvador the day she was murdered, local media reported.

He then killed her and dumped the body before driving back to the capital city.

Prosecutor Douglas Melendez told local media: “The man (Salazar Burgos) did not want his (current) girlfriend to know so that is why they travelled by car when he killed her.”

Melendez added: “He strangled her and he dumped the body between Olocuilta and Miramar.”

Reports state the investigation also gathered pieces of evidence after watching security camera videos where the couple was seen together the day of the murder.

The prosecution also provided DNA tests that proved that the suspect was the father of the victim’s baby.

A spokesperson of the Public Ministry who has not been named told local media: “We conducted a DNA test that confirmed with a 99.9 percent certainty that Henry Salazar was the father.”
