One of the rescuers, identified as Mr. Fan Qiang, told local media: “They didn’t know how deep the water was until the car started floating.

“We immediately drove the boats to rescue them and some of their luggage.”

Another rescuer named Huang Jianyou said: “We tried so hard to pull them out of the car. Afterwards, my arms went limp. In total, there were two adults, two youths and a child.”

One of the rescued passengers, Xu Chaoyang, said that he was pulled out of the window and then sent to hospital. The rescuers then sent a diver “to get out luggage from the sunk car”.

The relieved passenger also thanked the rescue team.

According to reports, southern China has been battered by heavy rains and flash floods since 12th July.

At least 17 people have been killed or are missing since the rainstorms began while 44 out of 65 local rivers are said to be swollen, causing flooding to residential areas, farmland and road networks.
