Dong Zenghui, who works in Japan to earn money for his mother’s medical bills, told Asia Wire he travelled back to China unexpectedly at the end of last year when his maternal grandmother took ill.

When he arrived back home in the early hours of New Year’s Day without telling his family, Mr Dong stayed outside until dawn so as not to disturb his father, who he knew would be resting.

Footage shared online, which is under the trending hashtag ‘dad sees son who returns home after 2 years’, shows Dong senior still putting on his belt when he opens the front door to see his son standing outside.

In the tear-jerking clip, the parent’s eyes well up and a big smile appears on his face as he says in shock: “When did you get back?”

Mr Dong lies and says: “Just now.”

His dad, who still cannot believe his son has come back to visit, adds: “Are you kidding me?”

Mr Dong told Asia Wire: “My visit was very sudden because my grandmother fell ill.

“My fiancee and I flew back to see her, and she died about five hours later.

“We only stayed for five days and are now back in Japan.”

Mr Dong, who quit school at an early age, moved to Japan with his partner shortly after their engagement in order to earn more money for his family.

His mother suffers from uraemia, and his poor village family does not have the means to provide for her treatment.

His work in a factory manufacturing machine parts subsidises both his family’s daily life and his parent’s medical bills.

In order to save more money for his mum, he rarely flies home, and barely sees his own fiancee who works in another city.

Mr Dong also happens to be an Arsenal fan, and signs of his support for the Gunners are scattered across his social media page.

He said: “I live in Gifu Prefecture next to Nagoya, where my girlfriend works, and where Arsene Wenger used to manage Nagoya Grampus.

“I’m a huge Arsenal fan. They’re the only team I watch.

“Wenger is my idol. He’s the most charismatic person ever.”

The former Arsenal boss, 70, now FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, coached what was then Nagoya Grampus Eight between 1995 and 1996.

In 1996, before taking the helm at Arsenal, he led the J.League side to its most successful season as runner’s-up, winning the Emperor’s Cup in the same year.
