A three-year-old has died after his mum accidentally ran over the boy – her only child – as she pulled out of a parking spot.

The incident took place at around 7pm in a municipal car park in the city of Montblanc in the north-eastern Spanish region of Catalonia while the family was on holiday.

According to local media, the Spanish family from Huesca was enjoying a day out with another couple and their children when tragedy struck.

The couple’s vehicle would not start and was in the process of being towed when the young victim’s mother, identified as G.D.C., went to move her car from the parking space to help.

Sadly, the boy, who was the married couple’s only child, was standing in front of his parent’s car and the mum failed to see him.

He was run over and was left unconscious with serious injuries, according to local media.

His parents rushed him to a nearby medical centre, but doctors could do nothing to save the boy’s life.

Reports said that the city council has issued a three-day mourning period following the accident.

The boy’s body is still undergoing an autopsy while the local authorities have confirmed that they are investigating the death.

The parents have not yet been called to give a statement but are expected to do so soon.

The investigation is ongoing.
