Three people have been arrested for carrying out a shooting spree in a rehabilitation centre killing 27 people.

The incident took place on 1st July at a rehab centre in the town of Irapuato in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato and the local authorities have arrested three suspects, according to the state public prosecutor’s office.

The gunmen claimed to be acting under the instructions of Jose Antonio Yepez Ortiz, alias ‘El Marro’, who runs the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel.

However, local media said they have an audio recording of El Marro denying any involvement and wanting to dissociate himself from the massacre.

According to reports, survivors of the attack said the gunmen claimed to be acting under the orders of the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel’s leader.

A preliminary investigation said that the gunmen targeted a group of attendees belonging to the rival organisation Jalisco New Generation Cartel, according to reports.

In an audio recording, El Marro is quoted as saying: “I want you to know that I had nothing to do with this.”

He also slammed “brainwashed” people for believing he was involved in “this f*cking problem” when he never even knew about the “f*cking place”.

According to local media, the rehab-centre massacre followed the killing of the lawyer for El Marro’s mum in Guanajuato that was allegedly carried out by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel with the cooperation of three police officers.
