The Mexican authorities have found 233 Central American migrants hoping to cross into the US inside an abandoned trailer where they were inside for at least 12 hours.

The discovery was made by agents from the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSP) who were patrolling the municipality of Las Choapas in the Mexican state of Veracruz at the Mexico-Guatemala border yesterday (15 February).

Local media said agents found 233 migrants inside what appeared to be an abandoned trailer on the side of a motorway located about 300 kilometres (186 miles) from the border.

Of the 233 people inside the trailer, 191 of them were from Guatemala, 11 from El Salvador, 19 from Honduras, one from Belize, and 11 from Nicaragua, according to local sources.

The migrants reportedly intended to enter the US.

Some of them were given medical care as the group had been inside the trailer for at least 12 hours which caused some of them to become dehydrated.

The region is known to have a regularly warm climate with an annual average temperature of about 27 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit).

The SSP issued a statement saying: “Once the migrants were assisted, agents proceeded to give them the necessary medical care while they were channelled into the National Institute of Migration (INM) to determine their situation in the country.”

The incident comes after 103 Central American migrants were found inside a lorry travelling through northern Mexico on 13th February in an apparent bid to enter to the US.
