The tragic incident occurred at a market in the city of Kaliningrad in the Russian federal subject Kaliningrad Oblast on 15th February where the couple worked.

Local media said that former alpine skier Yangolenko, 52, his pregnant wife Darya, 34, and 13-year-old son Rostislave were shot by a 63-year-old man, identified as Fazil Bakhramov, with a hunting rifle.

Both Yangolenko and Darya died on the scene, but little Rostislav, who was with them at time, was reportedly hospitalised. His current condition is unclear.

According to eyewitness reports, Bakhramov turned the rifle on his chest after shooting Yangloenko and his family resulting in his death some hours later at a local hospital.

The 63-year-old reportedly committed the murder over a business dispute he had with the couple as he owned a company in the same market where the incident took place.

The police investigation is ongoing.

Yangolenko was a two-time USSR champion in slalom skiing.

He won his first USSR championship at the age of 18 in 1985 when they were held in the city of Krasnoyarsk, where the athlete was originally from. He won his second in 1989.
