These pictures show the dad-of-two who died inside Lisbon airport and three border agents have been arrested on suspicion of having beaten him to death.

The man, now named in reports as Igor Gomenyuk, 40, died inside a temporary detention centre Lisbon’s Portela International Airport on 12th March after allegedly having illegally entered Portugal on 10th March.

A criminal investigation was launched and the Judicial Police (PJ) then arrested three members of the country’s Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) on suspicion of having beaten the Ukrainian man to death.

Those involved initially claimed the man had suffered an epileptic attack, having foamed at the mouth and hit his head against the wall.

He was reportedly found alive by a medical team face-down on the floor and handcuffed but they could not save his life.

However, a coroner found the victim had died from asphyxiation after several broken ribs had pierced his lungs and he had bruising compatible with aggression, according to reports.

His wife Oksana, who is mother to his two children, a 14-year-old daughter and an eight-year-old son has reportedly contacted the authorities in Portugal and offered her help in the investigation.

Local media report she could seek compensation from the Portuguese state for not having guaranteed the safety of her husband.

The family reportedly confirmed that the victim did not suffer from epilepsy and Gomenyuk is said to have arrived in Portugal without working papers after being promised a job by a Belgian construction company.

Reports state he had told Portuguese border authorities that he was entering the country as a tourist but their suspicions were aroused and he was taken to the temporary detention centre.

The victim was reportedly from the Lviv region of Ukraine and had been married to his wife Oksana for over 15 years.

The three suspects have been fired by the SEF but have reportedly refused to give statements to investigators. They have not been named in reports but are reportedly aged 42, 43 and 47.

It is unclear if they have been charged.
