This footage shows a runaway 1,500-lb buffalo going on a rampage through a city before it was shot dead after turning aggressive while trapped in a hotel.

The incident took place in the city of Malacca in the south-western Malaysian state of the same name when the 700-kilogramme (1,543-lb) buffalo strayed into the area of Jonker Walk early in the morning.

The chairman of the state Agriculture, Agro-Based, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative Committee, Datuk Norhizam Hassan Baktee, said attempts to capture the large animal peacefully were altered when the buffalo turned aggressive while trapped in a hotel.

Michael Quay, manager of the Casa del Rio hotel, said the buffalo rampaged through his hotel at around 6am.

He told reporters: “Our hotel’s CCTV caught the buffalo trespassing into the hotel and the footage showed the animal was in a state of panic.”

According to police spokesperson Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz, a 27-year-old man saw the buffalo in another hotel at around 7am.

He said: “The worker panicked and jumped from the second floor of the hotel. The Veterinary Services Department cordoned off the area where the male buffalo was with the help of other agencies before shooting it.”

The animal was shot dead around 10.15am, according to reports.

The police spokesperson added that the buffalo’s carcass was then taken to a slaughterhouse in the district of Jasin.

He added: “We are still looking for the animal’s owner.”
