A fire station has burned down in Germany, gutting the main building and destroying all 14 emergency vehicles.

The fire broke out at the fire station in the town of Oldenburg in the northernmost German state of Schleswig-Holstein on Tuesday.

According to the German newspaper Bild, the fire station blaze destroyed eight rooms, a communal bathroom, and all 14 emergency vehicles.

The affected rooms were so badly damaged that the station has had to be closed for several days with surrounding fire stations covering the area in the meantime.

The fire is believed to have started in the apparatus bay before spreading to the station’s vehicle fleet and rest of the main building, however, the investigation into the exact cause is ongoing.

The cost of the fire is currently unclear, but fire officials have confirmed the damage is extensive.

Despite the devastating blaze, local officials said they were relieved no one was injured in the incident.

Fire brigade spokesperson Andre Hasselmann, 49, told Bild: “Just like all the residents who call us, my colleagues and I stood helplessly in front of our burning building. For many of us, the volunteer fire service is a focus of life alongside our work and family. Some of my colleagues shed a tear during the fire, and nobody should be ashamed of that.”

Schleswig-Holstein’s Interior Minister Sabine Sutterlin-Waack visited the fire station on Tuesday afternoon, reassuring fire officials that they have her full support.

The investigation is ongoing.
