This is the moment a massive blaze rages from the roof of a luxury hotel leading to the evacuation of over 137 guests.

The fire broke out at the Grand Hotel in the city of Punta del Este in the south-eastern Uruguayan department of Maldonado and was filmed by a passing motorist who shared the clip on social media.

The hotel’s roof was mostly affected by the fire while reports said that a rainstorm passed over the city and helped firefighters to extinguish the flames.

Fire brigade spokeswoman Mariela Vivone told local media that at least 137 guests were evacuated from the hotel, which still had lights and full power at the time.

Hours after the evacuation, the Grand Hotel issued a statement thanking the fire service for their work in vacating guests and battling the flames.

One hotel visitor said that smoke was present in the corridors of the third floor and was difficult to pass through, but confirmed that his group was unhurt.

Hotel bosses said that the clean-up process will begin today.

They said in a statement: “The structural damage will be evaluated. It is estimated that the hotel will be out of use for no more than 60 days.”

According to local media, no one was injured during the fire and only material damage has so far been reported.

The investigation into the cause of the blaze is ongoing.
