So far, it is not known what caused the yacht Don Pepe to catch fire.

According to local media, it is the second serious incident to take place in Mexican waters in a month.

On 19th December 2019, the cruise ship Carnival Glory was manoeuvring at the Puerta Maya pier and cruise centre in the southern Mexican state of Quintana Roo when it reportedly crashed into the vessel Carnival Legend.

According to the Quintana Roo government, the collision was caused by strong winds.
