A 10-year-old boy has drowned in a swimming pool on a cruise ship in Malaysia.

The youngster, named in reports as Singaporean Alan Heng Kai Lun, 10, was on the Genting Dream cruise ship with his mother and a friend after it docked at the Star Cruise Jetty in the Langkawi area of Malaysia when the incident occurred.

Local media report the boy drowned in a swimming pool on the ship and was treated by the ship’s medical team who performed CPR.

However, the boy could not be saved.

Local police chief Mohammed Iqbal Ibrahim said in a press statement that there were “many” people in the pool along with an attendant at the time of the accident.

Investigators have taken statements from witnesses and the body of the victim has been sent to the Sultanah Maliha Langkawi Hospital in order for a postmortem examination to be carried out. The investigation is ongoing.

The cruise ship, carrying around 3,000 passengers and crew, has since set sail for Phuket in Thailand.

Dream Cruises, who operate the ship, said they were “cooperating with the relevant authorities” and helping the victim’s family.

The ship had departed Singapore the day before for a three-night cruise.
